For the second straight game, Fort Wayne had a wild play go against them.
Dayton’s Zack Cozart stood on third, waiting to tag up on a fly ball hit to Wizards outfielder Yefri Carvajal in the third inning.
As the ball made its way to the left fielder’s glove, Cozart headed home for an apparent sacrifice fly. The only problem was, he appeared to leave too soon. The ball popped out of Carvajal’s glove, right to teammate Luis Durango.
The center fielder fired to third for what the Wizards believed should have been a double play. The umpires ruled, correctly, that Cozart could leave the bag once the ball was touched. The run counted. It was a big one as the Dragons went on for a 5-4 victory.
“It was the correct call,” Wizards manager Doug Dascenzo said. “I wanted to go out and see what was going on. He had it right. It doesn’t hurt to ask sometimes. The runner is allowed to leave the base as soon as it touches his glove. That’s a weird play because you happen to have another guy right there who catches the ball. It was worth going out and seeing what (the umpire) had on it. He was right.”
