During USC week we had a chance to catch up with former Notre Dame defensive end Ross Browner, who was on the 1977 Irish team and was in town for the USC-Notre Dame game. Browner, who was an honorary captain at last year's spring game.
Insights: What have you been up to lately?
Ross Browner: Well, right now I'm working in Nashville working with Backfield In Motion, a non-profit organization where we're trying to change the lives of fifth through eighth graders and show them how to be good citizens, good athletes and good scholars.
Insights: How'd you get involved in that?
RB: Well, I was recruited by Joe Davis and Pete Johnson. We lost a real great NFL ball player by the name of Reggie Roby, a great kicker in the NFL for many years with the Miami Dolphins. He passes and Joe wanted to continue on with somebody in the same position so they interviewed me, hired me and I've been here for almost three years now.
Insights: What has it been like working with the kids, what's that experience been like?
RB: It's almost the same thing (as Notre Dame). They are green. They are knowledgeable. Once they start getting the knowledge and really start understanding the game of football and everything we're teaching them, how to be good citizens and good individuals and not get in trouble and take care of things in school, I can see the smiles. I can see the development and the young people changing their lives right now.

Good to hear where Ross is and what he is doing. Last time I saw him was at a Special Olympics golf outing fund raiser. He and I were in the same foursome and I must say that he was a super football player, but put a golf club in his hands and it is like giving a gorilla free reign with a machete to dig humongous holes in the fairway turf. A poor golfer, but a great guy!
