Some things you know, some things you may have missed and "I Don't Know Butchie, Instead."
Some things you know:
- If you've been reading Insights regularly, you know that Anthony Fasano played well in Dallas' preseason opener. Turns out his teammates agree. Fasano caught three passes on Thursday night and will be used more often this year as new Dallas offensive coordinator Jason Garrett has said he'll use two tight end sets.
- Former Notre Dame lineman Mark LeVoir is making moves in Chicago Bears camp. The Sun Times is reporting LeVoir impressed Bears' offensive coordinator Ron Turner and might be able to stick with the NFC Champions.
Some things you may have missed:
- Notre Dame junior forward Luke Zeller began his Athletes In Action tour Saturday with a 123-98 loss to the West Sydney Razorbacks. Zeller, though, scored 14 points and had four rebounds. Think Mike Brey would take that from Zeller every night? Us too.
- The Irish picked up two women's lacrosse commitments -- both from Andover High School in Massachusetts. Defenders Kelly Driscoll and Georgianna Shoemaker have known each other since they were 6 years old and will be two of three captains for Andover in the spring before heading to South Bend.
"I Don't Know Butchie, Instead:"
- The Sporting News' Matt Hayes named wide receiver George West as one of his breakout players for 2007. After seeing West today, we think he'll help out -- especially in the kick return game -- but our bet to really break out is the guy standing next to him returning kicks, freshman Armando Allen. The Florida native really impressed today and looks to be a guy who will be a gamebreaker for Notre Dame before his career is over.
- During Saturday's post-practice chat -- and you can read about it Sunday in the Journal Gazette -- Charlie Weis gave a cryptic response as to why Jimmy Clausen didn't throw any long passes Saturday. After saying he only called one long pass the whole day -- not true, because every other quarterback went deep or at least mid-range at least once in team drills -- he said "Can he throw deep? I guess we'll have to wait until Sept. 1 to find out." We have no idea what this means, but is it possible Weis just clued us in to what way he's leaning as far as a starter -- or at least the 1A option? Should make for an interesting two more weeks.
