You asked for it, you got it. These are artist renderings of what the new scoreboard at Memorial Coliseum will look like.
Download scoreboardrendering.pdf
There are some important things to realize about these:
1) The top and bottom rectangles will actually be round, 360-degree LCD display ribbon boards. They will be capable of switching from advertising to graphics that correspond with games, such as denoting goals.
2) The design of the advertising panels on the side may change.
3) While it's hard to tell from this, the size difference between this scoreboard and the old one will be very dramatic.
Thanks to the folks at the Coliseum for getting these to me.
- There still has been no announcement out of Muskegon regarding the future of coach Bruce Ramsay, but this makes it sound like he's going to be back. Although the last comment, about "crash and burn" hockey, that sure sounds like a bad choice of words.

Looks good,... wonder what'll go through the ref's mind when he watches the replay of his BLOWN CALL? :P
Posted by: Geronimo | June 10, 2008 at 03:14 PM
Interesting. Looks like it will be nice once. Can't wait to see the real thing. :)
And... um... yeah. "Crash and burn". Hmmmm... Sounds like someone is a bit confused as to the meaning of that phrase. :D
Posted by: Wendy | June 10, 2008 at 03:39 PM
"crash and burn" hockey is ok for them...lol!
Geronimo...(love the name, btw!)same as all the other refs...NOTHING!! no oops, no "my bad", ya know, a big blank nothingness...how blissful that must feel!
boy, i am mean today!! better just shut up now...lol
Posted by: Cat Eyes | June 10, 2008 at 04:04 PM
I am sure you mean the dramatic size difference will mean its bigger. Right? Just making sure.
Posted by: Homco | June 10, 2008 at 04:47 PM
Yes, bigger.
Posted by: Justin Cohn | June 10, 2008 at 05:14 PM
It's about time.
And it's hard for me to believe that the current scoreboard is only 15 years old. I'm thinking they mean the shots on goal/goals/teams etc. part, not the actual over sized light bright part. It seems like that thing has been at the MC for at least 20 years.
15 years ago, they had freakin Nintendo and Sega Genesis, I'm sure they could of done better then that.
Posted by: Junior | June 10, 2008 at 06:36 PM
Nice! Thanks for the pictures, Justin. Something else to look forward to. "Oversized light bright" -that's too funny! Pretty accurate though...

They'll have to have one of those roving fan cameras, too. Close-ups of face paint, and couples kissing, too (and then two visiting team players at the end)! Can't wait!
Posted by: Geronimo | June 10, 2008 at 09:53 PM
GREAT idea, Geronimo...shots of the visiting team players, I mean! Generates juvenile laughs at other arenas around the country, why not here...I'm not above it!! Hey, Deuce, what happens in the locker room stays in the locker room, isn't that what we told Laaa-rrryy and Margettie?? Larry took it well, but Margettie, not so much!! lol
Is it October yet???
Posted by: Cat Eyes | June 11, 2008 at 08:56 AM
The new scoreboard looks GREAT! I will only get to see it MAYBE 3-4x this year, since I will be moving in 3 days.
As far as watching couples kissing and other things the new scoreboard will be able to show...It is so cool to see. They have what is known as the *kissing cam* in Bloomington. They also show video clips of prior games during intermissions. As well as *On air personalities* talking about the games and whatnot. Also they have a bison charging at the opponents goaltender when a goal is scored. Maybe the Komets will have a fireball, shooting down the goaltender. LOL. Its HUGE. Anyone thats been to U.S. Cellular Coliseum has saw just how big it is. SOOOOOOOO COOL. Just hope ours is better.
BTW....It is with a heavy heart that I will be moving TO Bloomington Friday. BUT, I recently got married and my husband works and lives in Bloomington. I spent the 1st 3 weeks of my marriage away from him and need to be with him. I will always be a Komet and wear my Orange and black loud and proud...EVEN in Bloomington.
Posted by: Karla Stranger | June 11, 2008 at 01:40 PM
Congratulations on your recent marriage Karla! :) So will you be in Bloomington Illinois or Indiana? From that last line, I suppose you mean Illinois, but for the longest time, I just assumed that the Prairie Thunder was based in southern Indiana. D'oh!
Posted by: Wendy | June 11, 2008 at 03:31 PM
At least he lives in an IHL city, you only have a 6/10,016 shot of that happening in the United States.
Posted by: Junior | June 11, 2008 at 03:33 PM
Karla,
Congratulations to both of you.
Posted by: Bob | June 11, 2008 at 03:43 PM
Karla -- congratz! how tough would that be to be apart! bad to move away, good to move with him. come say hi to us when ya visit! wendy and i will be the crazy redheads, you'll recognize us...and fiveminutemajor too!!
wendy -- i just found out this week that bloomington was NOT here in IN, so don't feel bad...i was telling someone about the drive to youngstown thing being disputed on here, and he told me the prairie thunder were in IL. glad i did not say anything stupid on here!! i never really looked on their website very closely i guess!
Posted by: Cat Eyes | June 11, 2008 at 04:14 PM
He-he. Great to know I wasn't alone in that! I didn't realize it until the season was nearly over, either. I think I heard Bob Chase mention being in Illinois, which baffled me. I had to look it up to see where it was. I didn't even know Illinois had a Bloomington. With the fame of IU, I think most people just automatically think Indiana when they hear that name. After I figured it out, I started telling people I knew, "No, really! It's in Illinois!" They were all as surprised as I was.

Karla... Is Mr. Stranger a PT fan? If so,...
I thought Bloomington's was a department store.:]
Posted by: Geronimo | June 11, 2008 at 05:52 PM
Congrats on your marriage= you'll become a bloomington fan = and get a Ewasko jersey for you & your hubby aswedding presents, just kidding.

Posted by: deuce | June 11, 2008 at 07:28 PM
Congratulations, Karla! :)
What happened to Ewasko, anyways?
Posted by: FiveMinuteMajor | June 11, 2008 at 07:29 PM
Thanks everybody.....Im pretty sad, but I will do fine Im sure with time.I havent been out of Fort Wayne to live since 1980. Mr. Stranger HATES hockey. I have to educate him on the finer sport. LOL. Yes Im VERY happy Im still in an IHL city. Shit isnt far from Rockford,Quad City,Chicago or Peoria for that matter. Maybe be able to see my Ducks play the Blackhawks
Yes thats Bloomington,Illinois.
UMMMMMMMMM thats a resounding HELL NO....I will NEVER be a PT fan. To me that would be sacrilage.
Shivers at the thought of the Ewasko jersey.....

Karla...you married a hockey hater??? wow...you are truly in love with that dude! just remember, we're here for ya if you need your "fix"!
Posted by: Cat Eyes | June 12, 2008 at 09:17 AM
I too have been going to Komet Hockey for over 25+ years and thought the scoreboard has been the same since.
The new scoreboard sounds & looks KOOL!
My spouse is also not to much of a hockey fan but he goes to the game (when he is not working) for me. My boys are hooked on hockey as well. My one son has Komet orange walls, black & orange bedding, and I painted the Komet logo on his wall.

K's just re-signed PC for this upcoming season.

Wendy and Cat Eyes, do you sit in lower 209?
Posted by: Karla Stranger | June 12, 2008 at 02:48 PM
Karla--depends on who I go with...if i go with deuce, i sit wherever he sits...sometimes lower 211, sometimes lower 217 (which i love because I have a VERY big mouth and love harassing the other team), but other times if i am poor, i just get upper arena and just sit wherever i can. i try to hit as many as i can, but have a kid who loves to go and it gets very expensive!! lol so worth it, of course...just post me and let me know if you are going and i'll make arrangements to meet ya after period one at a certain place or whatever! wendy and actually don't know each other in non-blog life, just from here. we plan to meet someday at one of the games too...maybe halloween since we are such fans of that holiday!
Posted by: Cat Eyes | June 12, 2008 at 03:25 PM
He HATES hockey? Uh-oh. You know that "I'll change him" stuff never actually works, don't you? lol.
I don't know where Cat Eyes sat, since we haven't actually met yet! As for me, I sat in lower 215 or 216 for most of the games I attended.
Posted by: Wendy | June 12, 2008 at 03:38 PM
Let me know when you guys are in the area of 217- that's where I'm at! :)
Posted by: FiveMinuteMajor | June 12, 2008 at 07:12 PM
Actually, I sat in seat 13 at several games (hey, there's that number again!) :D So I was right next to 217. You probably saw me. I was the one fumbling with the camera.

doesnt anyone under 30 read a newspaper anymore?
Posted by: chuckitt | June 12, 2008 at 11:35 PM
chuckitt: Does this mean you think I'm under 30? :D Actually, I read the newspaper, too. I love the smell of newsprint in the morning.
Posted by: Wendy | June 12, 2008 at 11:52 PM
chuckitt--i read the comics, does that count? lol no, i do read the paper, but i never noticed that they put the states in there, just the cities...hmmm...guess my geography teachers are cringing if they are reading this! oh well, i guess it's a good thing they can't tell who i really am!! besides it's my bday and i don't care today!! :) and i am young!! (not gonna say HOW young because chuckitt doesn't like young'uns?? just kiddin, chuckitt!) happy friday the 13th/cat eyes birthday, everyone!!
Posted by: Cat Eyes | June 13, 2008 at 09:36 AM
Happy Birthday, Cat Eyes.
I think you gave away a hint at your age....I doubt that too many of the under 30 set would know what a geography class is!
Posted by: Bob | June 13, 2008 at 06:53 PM
Happy Birthday Cat Eyes! Don't do anything we wouldn't do! :)
Posted by: FiveMinuteMajor | June 13, 2008 at 07:59 PM
ummm...i heard about it from my older sister, bob? how's that work for ya?? lol!! i really am not that old, tho...and i did not have geography classes that i can remember...they just tried to teach us where stuff was. i did just graduate from ipfw last year (07), if that helps to place the age frame any better...i went for 6 years, not the traditional 4...having a kid and going to school is harder than it looks for everyone else!
thanks for the bday wishes, both bob and fiveminute major...i'll try not to do anything ya would not do, but that could leave me wide open, since i really don't know you, now do i?? hmmm.....i'll be hangin'w/deuce from this blog, so i'll probably be in trouble!! wonder if the jail will let me pop on on monday morning to ask someone for bail money...just kiddin!!
Posted by: Cat Eyes | June 13, 2008 at 08:12 PM
38, sorry, had to do it!
Posted by: deuce | June 14, 2008 at 07:03 AM
i know you are, but what am i??
you know what they say about paybacks, deuce...you are sooo gettin' it...i'll think up a good punishment for ya, believe me!!
sadly, he is right...but i don't look it!! having a kid like mine keeps me young. plus just being immature does as well!!
deuce, however, will look rough the next time you all see him...
Posted by: Cat Eyes | June 14, 2008 at 02:53 PM
lovem under 30
Posted by: chuckitt | June 14, 2008 at 04:47 PM
I have a don't ask a "Don't ask/Don't tell" policy when it comes to age.
Posted by: Wendy | June 14, 2008 at 10:03 PM
usually I would never disclose a womans age but I made an exception in this case. and I expect payback. what are you gonna do, not let me turn 38 also???? lol
Posted by: deuce | June 15, 2008 at 12:45 AM
thanks, chuckitt...even tho i'm not under 30, i still play it like i am...and i act like it most days!! lol
wendy...good policy...deuce, ya hearin' this?? and you have older sisters who i KNOW taught ya better than this...
deuce...you can turn 38 and i can shout it from the rooftops...it's ok for men to be old...the whole age bias thing is usually only toward us women anyway. you men want your wine old and your women young! and your payback will come when you least expect it...or maybe i'll be nice and just let you get away with it this time...just because i like ya so much...or maybe that's just what i want you to think...you know me, i am a clever little girl and i can get ya later on (insert evil laugh here)! glad ya came over last nite...had a great time!! this morning was a little rough, but i'll live! the goalie stayed up and partied till midnite w/us...what a kid!!
Posted by: Cat Eyes | June 15, 2008 at 11:38 AM
After 30yrs. of marrage a guy had a nice home & all the toys said to his wife - we've came a long ways-I remember our one room apartment-black&white TV and laying on our pullout bed with a hot 25 yr. old-she said go ahead and find yourself that 25yr. old and you can have all those things you use to have.
Posted by: mightbite | June 15, 2008 at 01:48 PM
mightbite...lol!!! is that a been there done that story for you??? funny one, either way...
Posted by: Cat Eyes | June 15, 2008 at 06:52 PM
Isn't it odd how some of the players are younger than me and at one time I was younger than the players (except Guy D)!
Posted by: Melissa S | June 16, 2008 at 11:01 PM
melissa...with ya on that one...i was checking birthdates and realized that a couple of these guys could almost be my kids, had i started a little early!! yikes!! but at least a couple are still older than me...only a couple , but still...
Posted by: Cat Eyes | June 17, 2008 at 08:27 AM
I know what you mean. I remember the first time I saw an Olympics where most of the athletes were younger than me. How depressing is that? I had watched it for years, dreaming of being in them. When I was 9, I desperately wanted to be a figure skater. Not that I knew how to skate. My mom told me that it was already too late. She said that Olympic figure skaters started practicing when they were 4 or 5 or some such thing. :(
Posted by: Wendy | June 17, 2008 at 03:38 PM
My first skates to play hockey in was figure skates + aleft handed hockey stick-think that really helped me + starting playing pond hockey=helps with checking.
Posted by: mightbite | June 17, 2008 at 05:19 PM
mightbite...do ya still play? you should come out to macmillan and show us your stuff! i, however, need to get on some skates this summer so i can do the same next year...not that my stuff will be much to show next year either, but it sounds like so much fun! i don;t think i'll get there this week to watch the guys play, but i'll shoot (pardon the pun) for next week maybe.
