What a shocker, another home victory for the Komets, 4-2 over the Flint Generals. That makes 17 in a row, one off the franchise record set in 1963-64 and five off the International Hockey League mark set in 1965-66 by the Muskegon Mohawks.
You know what was a shocker? How lopsided a game this was Wednesday. The Komets outshot the Generals 49-19, including 22-2 in the second period. Granted, the Generals are very banged up and played two men short. But the Komets played one man short and it seemed almost all of the Generals' offensive chances were a result of mistakes by Fort Wayne.
I thought Komets goalie Nick Boucher really set the tone early, stopping a Jordan Fox shot at the back end of a 4-on-1 rush to keep it scoreless.
"You rely on your defenseman to stay in the middle of the slot and take away some of the passing options," Boucher said of the sequence. "And then you hope the guy just shoots it and he kind of did that. I got lucky. He just came down the wing and fired it. It's Fox and he's a quality player. He just didn't make a really good play on it. "
- There were two brilliant saves in this game. Flint's Eric Marvin made a mid-air stop on Mathieu Curadeau, after Marvin was tripped up by his own player in the second period. Unfortunately for him, Curadeau got to his own rebound and scored. But it was pretty all the same.
- The Komets weren't happy with themselves, feeling they played poorly. After outshooting the opposition by 30? Hmmm.
- Even though the Generals pulled within a goal of Fort Wayne early in the third period, the Komets came right back and got a Luciano Aquino goal on a redirection. When leading in the third period, the Komets are 32-1-1.
- The Komets played without defenseman Brent Henley, who served the fourth game of his five-game suspension for high-sticking Tyler Willis of Kalamazoo. As part of the punishment, the Komets had to play one man short of a 19-player lineup. There were also without center Terry Marchant, who injured his ankle during practice and will be out through the weekend, and defenseman Brandon Warner (knee).
- Curadeau came off the ice late with an apparent head injury. General manager David Franke said he should be OK.
- I'm told Mitch Woods' third-period misconduct was for arguing with the officials over where a faceoff should have been.
- I couldn't help but chuckle during the second period when I overheard Flint's radio broadcaster, Denis J. Puska, refer to the Komets' "immobile" defense being a weakness. Huh? That being said, I think Puska has been a great addition to the Generals' organization. He's very entertaining.
- The writer from The Flint Journal took a shot at the people of Fort Wayne. I'll bite my tongue, but I'm sure you all can chime in. (May I suggest some references to the movie "Semi-Pro," which is set in Flint.)

Steve reminds me of some of those clowns from Quad City..... full of Komet envy.

Stevie Numbers doesn't need to come on here and defend Savage. Savage can defend himself. Savage thinks he is so much smarter than everyone. He is just upset that his "paper champs" aren't as good as what he thought they were. No one gave the Komets any chance to be good this year, particularily Savage and the Flint faithful, all 1500 of them....

The team, management, arena, and city is something to be darn proud of but there really isn't much benefit rubbing people's noses in it, even if Savage started the whole thing. The regular season crown at this point means nothing. That ship has sailed. The second season is what counts. Getting too loud or full of ourselves can backfire because this place will be crawling with trolls if we do anything short of winning the cup.

BS the reg season doesn't mean anything! BS we can't be proud of our team and "rub other's noses in it!" And BS if we should watch out for trolls coming back to "backfire" us!
You think the roll the Komets are on doesn't mean anything? You think other teams are wanting to be the fourth place team to come in our barn and try to take us down after we have a run at the record? You think if we set the record, that's not something you will tell your kids about? I understand if it was Bloomington, who has been around for two years (?), making a run at their team record that it wouldn't be a big deal, but come on! This is something that hasn't been done in 55+ years!!! That's something to be damn proud of!
It's not like we are taking full page ads out of the Flint Journal to brag about our team. We are blogging about it on a KOMET BLOG!!! If you don't like reading about the KOmets or reading about their fan's thoughts, don't get on the BLOG! I for one, will stand up to anyone who thinks the Komets aren't that importain in the grand skeem of life. Anything you can say you spent your life doing and has made you, and hundreds of thousands of others, happier is a big event and deserves respect from everyone! I am proud to say four gens. of Musser's have gone to Komet Games and I hope four more will go as well!!! Hell, if it wasn't for the Komets, I wouldn't have met my wife.
I bet if we were rubbing Flint's noses in the fact that we have the best scoop guys in the IHL you wouldn't stop us then, hun?

Sorry for the rant (not really)and all the spelling or grammer mistakes, but I don't like the tone some on here has taken. Call me wrong, I don't care. It's the truth and the way most real fans of the Komets feel. If I am wrong about that, let me know!
Posted by: Hoss | March 06, 2008 at 11:54 PM
Didn't mean to rile you up, Hoss. Maybe I should clarify?
Aside from how it was written, the regular season does mean something. Great achievement with great accomplishments along the way. What I meant is that its a foregone conclusion we will win regular season at this point.
Second season is what matters. Especially blowing through the regular season as we have. Comes with a big target and alot of pressure. I think that is pretty clear cut how it was worded.
Getting too loud or full of ourselves: Its pie in our face if they fall short. Nothing wrong with supporting and being proud of your team. But when you start talking smack and get stupid about it, whatever is dished out comes back ten fold from everyone who can't stand you. (I should know).

Sorry, but I slept on it and re-read your post and still have the same thoughts. I guess I just don't get it, hun?

Scoops knows everything, just ask him...

I'm not a fan of scoops, so I'll leave it right there.
I would like to address the person who said NO ONE was giving the Komets a chance to be good. That's ridiculous. Every where I read was that this league was for either Flint or Fort Wayne to take. But what many were SCARED of was that the Komets wouldn't be tough. I was one of them. That certainly has not been the case either.

I think you are smart enough to get what I said, even the first time around. Truth be told, we and others alike would like to see this team keep cruising along and conclude the season with a championship. That is all that really matters in the end. Not the rants, stabs, or pointless remarks we all do from time to time.
Posted by: scoops | March 07, 2008 at 03:49 PM
But I hope he keeps posting!
Posted by: TGP | March 07, 2008 at 03:49 PM
And he is.
Posted by: TGP | March 07, 2008 at 03:49 PM
So now we, or just I, are/am not smart enough to read what you type and understand what you mean?
Kind of like last week how I needed to "tell the truth and be bashed for it." What does that mean?
Posted by: Hoss | March 07, 2008 at 04:00 PM
Is this an Abbett and Costello routine?
Your first question, I have no idea how to answer really. I just think you took what I originally said and made alot out of nothing really. I didn't put anyone down or question anyones opinion, just gave my own.
Your second question you misunderstood but after finding that post I could see how this happened. "You tell the truth and get hammered for it" was not in reference to you but rather myself.
Marchant is quietly having a good year.....
People lately have been more interested in fights, who fights who, or Brent Henley in general.
We have people here posting under different names to start fights with others.
Those statements may not be the dictionary definition of truth but there is certainly more fact than fiction there. I thought it was an honest assessment at that time. I didn't say it was wrong or tell anyone what to think. People, primarily yourself, just took what was there and made of it what you wanted.
I know it probably doesn't change anything but maybe it might clear some things up somewhat.

I would like to clarify my statement about no one giving these Komets a chance. I can remember the long debate about Coach Sims not being a good coach, this was a debate from Flint fans mainly on the Intotheboards blog, and it did spill over to this blog before the season started. Savage basically ripped the Komets and their chances from the start and handed Flint the trophy before the season started. Alot of know-it-alls over on the before-mentioned blog were picking Flint #1 and the Komets anywhere from 3-5 this season.
This was the blog that had many not giving Aquino a snowballs chance in hell of being a good player because he was sent to Fort Wayne. Somehow him being sent here was a redflag that meant he wasn't any good. That played itself out and guess what, he might be the best player at this level of hockey.
There were several that doubted the Komets chances on this blog, a ton on the other blog doubted them, and tons of people doubted the entertainment value of this league all together.
I would like to say one thing...The Komets are awesome this season, and this has been one of the most entertaining seasons in 10 plus years because of the IHL and the rivalries that have formed. Heck, Bloomington comes into Fort Wayne and every game is exciting...they are last in this league.
The team gets an A+.
The league's entertainment gets an A.
The refs, well, they still suck.

I guess we all have to go back to the frist plan of just ignoring the ones we don't agree with since we read too much into things... OK with me!
