The Komets' Guy Dupuis was selected as International Hockey League Defenseman of the Month, for the third time this season, after he tallied one goal and 11 points. Center Mathieu Curadeau, who had six goals and 11 points, got Rookie of the Month. And Nick Boucher, who was 5-1-1 with a 1.97 goals-against average and a .916 save percentage, won Goaltender of the Month.
Meanwhile, I know I wasn't the only one critical of Komets defenseman Sergei Durdin for his propensity for neglecting his defensive play. He sure seems to have picked up his play: He leads the IHL with a plus-27 rating.
The Komets are two home victories away from the franchise record for longest streak at Memorial Coliseum, 18 games. In case you're wondering how the 1963-64 team, which holds the current mark, did that season: They were 41-28-1 and finished second in a seven-team league before losing to Toledo in the playoff finals.
As for the Muskegon Mohawks, who hold the IHL-record 22-game streak set in 1965-66, they won the regular-season title with a 46-19-5 record but lost in the first round to eventual-champion Port Huron 4-0.

I ripped on Durdin early this year-never would of thought he'd lead in + -.

+/- is overrated! I do think Durdin is doing much better than the start of the year, but he is still not living up to the hype of the Franke's and Quad-City fans (Who would have thaugh Mallard-Heads lied?).
Just last Friday, Durdin was a fault for the second goal and Reiter let him know afterwards. Or I guess he could have been saying, "I bet this will drop your +/-!"

I'm sure he was offering some advice since it didn't help his gaa!!!! lol

Congratulations to everyone with the awards, but how the heck did Drouin not get forward of the week?! I demand a recount!

+/- is the biggest statistical liar that there is in sports. There are so many things that can happen to influence that stat that inflates it. A guy skates onto the ice at the end of a play that ends up a goal and he gets a plus and had nothing to do with the goal....

Watching Durdin makes me wonder how his +/- is that high. He has to lead the team in turnovers in the defensive zone as well. =/- is over rated!

if we had to drop one player I would choose Durdin, that being said, I wouldn't change anything right now.

I'd have to agree with +/- being overrated, just look at Chaulk's, he has one of the worst +/- on the team and he plays on the top line
Posted by: Andrew | March 03, 2008 at 09:19 PM
Thats just showing that Durdin is there for the goals and hasn't been out there to be scored against. A lot of the goals have been scored on that top line with Chaulk.

I'm just guessing here, but we have to be pretty close if not the top of the league in scoring! That would help anyone's Plus Minus.

Shaw, we are the top scoring team.
Komets=202
Flint=197
K-Zoo=188
Port H=184
Musky=165
Bloom=147
Posted by: Hoss | March 03, 2008 at 09:40 PM
P.S. We only have 137 GA and the next closest team is Musky with 181!!!
Posted by: Hoss | March 03, 2008 at 09:41 PM
Yes. I was right. Finally!!!

Oh, and props to Curadeau. he's probably my favorite player to watch this year, he hits guys and yet is very clean, he can find the back of the net too (also he does that one knee fist pump thing, which is cool)

You know what they say, "Every blind dog see the sun and finds a nut one time."
Or something like that....

And that is in regards to??

Where is the abeatenhorse ???

I think +/- is one of those stats that if it works for your argument its relevant, and if it doesnt then its not....

I too am amazed at Durdin's stats. I would never have guessed he'd be leading the league. He frustrates me at times and I don't like how he rags on the goalies at times. However, he's part of an amazing team and I wouldn't change a thing. I also agree with fiveminute major - PC definately deserved forward of the week! Maybe he can do even better this week starting with Flint tomorrow night. I'm really looking forward to this game. Go K's!!!

Speaking of tomorrow's game, I need everyone to give a big cheer for Whitney Young, as we are the PHP school of the game. My class is so excited to see "The Komet guys who came to our school" play hockey. They have been waiting so long to see them play.

Somebody want to call Flint and remind them its still winter out and they might want to consider leaving a little early for tomorrows game.
