KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- What happened to the Fort Wayne vs. Kalamazoo rivalry? The Komets own the Wings this season with an 8-1-1 record.
The latest game was a 5-2 Komets victory on Saturday night. The Komets were sloppy in the first and dominant beyond.
Anyone else wondering if the Wings regret not hiring Greg Puhalski last summer?
- Though goalie Nick Boucher looked a little shaky early, he recovered and stopped 26 shots in the victory. It's going to be fascinating to see how coach Al Sims makes his goaltending decisions down the stretch.
- P.C. Drouin had a goal and an assist, continuing his hot streak.
- The power play went 1 for 5. It, too, has been on a roll and the reason, according to Sims, is that he has so many players he can use on special teams he can ride the hot hands.
- If you see the post below this one about whether or not Mathieu Curadeau's penalty shot goal counts as short-handed, apparently there is disagreement. The Komets checked it all out and said it is short-handed. The Wings have ruled otherwise and are calling it even-strength. The IHL hasn't gotten back to me. I'm going to defer to the Komets' decision until I hear from the league, because I know I've seen this situation before and they've gone that way before. (Plus, I can't find anyone who doesn't work for the Wings who thinks it isn't a short-handed goal.) I'll let you know when/if the league gets back to me on this one.
- For those wondering about Olivier Legault, a Komets official told me his finger injury is something he can't fight with right now. Since that's such a big part of his game, they figured they might as well let it heal for a while. I expect him to be out a couple weeks.
- With Flint losing 4-2 to Port Huron tonight, it makes you wonder if the Icehawks will be the Komets' stiffest competition. I still think the Generals are the ones to watch, but not if they play like they did in the third period Friday.

I love how you get to the bottom of things Justin!!! You are the Law and Order of Komet hockey!!! FYI, I was introduced to the NHL Network, and I am still up at 5:30 so I could see the top 10 Blackhawks. I thought Stan Mikita was "Al Bundy" on Wayne's World. Such an eye opening experiance this NHL Network is!

Well I thought everyone would think this would be funny. Last weekend I attended an Indiana Ice game. After walking around prior the game and during the intermissions, I counted more Komet, Checkers, and Racer Jersey's than I did Ice Jerseys. I stopped to talk to a few of the persons wearing Komet Jerseys and they said they use to live in Fort Wayne. A few gentlemen in the bar with the checker jeresys said they want IHL hockey for next season and a name change from the ICE to the Checkers to give the ICE a new identity. Most of the people in the city don't even know that Indy still has hockey.

One item I forgot. The last four home games, the last two weekends, the ICe averaged 4,500 fans per game. With that average, they would be right behind FTW in attendance.
Posted by: jkmess11 | February 03, 2008 at 09:59 AM
4,500 is pretty good for Indy! I would love to see them back with the Komets in the IHL. Another great road trip close to home.
Posted by: Hoss | February 03, 2008 at 11:27 AM
If they average 4,500, when they are back in the "I" It would jump to 5,500 with all the Komet fans that would make the trip to the games.
Posted by: top_shelf | February 03, 2008 at 11:38 AM
Glad to see you made it home safe Top_Shelf. How was the trip? I still hate you for your Weekend o' Hockey! I guess my wife doesn't love me as much....LOL
Posted by: Hoss | February 03, 2008 at 11:53 AM
Thats pretty good attendance for junior hockey. the owners of the ice must be making some coin since the players arent paid and the majority of them go on to play college hockey.
Anyone think the giants will cover the spread today?
Posted by: gerry | February 03, 2008 at 12:11 PM
Well that is what is funny. I guy I work with is a season ticket holder and he says the ICE are barely making money.
What I have heard is because in the last two season they have averaged only 2000 fans a game, their rent for their venue is steep. However, if they could prove and maintain an average of ,4500 or 5,000 fans a game, they could possibly pay no rent like the Komets. According to the internet, as of this date, the Ice have averaged 2,900 fans per game all season.
Has anyone heard any update of the IHL Stragety meeting for Chicago and Indy participating next year?
Posted by: jkmess11 | February 03, 2008 at 12:37 PM
Hey what about me? I don't work for the Wings and I don't think it's a sh goal; it's an even-strength goal. 1-on-1 and Curadeau gets a plus. There are no minuses.

In the Montreal/Rangers game, there was a penalty shot awarded while the Canadiens were on the PP, the Canadiens scored on the penalty shot, and it was not ruled a pp goal....same concept last night, penalty shot is a penalty shot, not a power play or short handed.

Hey Justin or anyone else,

That was the greatest super bowl I have seen in my lifetime.

I'm happy for Eli, he took a lot of (stuff) all year.
Posted by: mightbite | February 04, 2008 at 12:18 AM
Ok....Eli Manning was superb on that last drive....amazing....just to scramble away from 3 guys who had a hold of him and then tyree to make that unbelievable catch!! glad the Giants won..didn't want a team who cheats to win it.....anyways..back to the legault story....i talked to him personally at the last home game against flint and he says there was no injury!
Posted by: kometfan | February 04, 2008 at 12:30 AM
Legualt = Bucko who is scared of King-Kong JORDE & asked to be put on IR.
Posted by: mightbite | February 04, 2008 at 07:24 AM
Yes shaw!! Best superbowl in years. Giants coming out on top just made it that much better. I am still pumped i got to watch the best game all year. Now, im even ready for more hockey. Bring it on:)
Posted by: booner | February 04, 2008 at 07:29 AM
Legault isn't afraid of Jorde. The dude has a busted finger. Why not let it heal and keep his rookie status for next year?
Posted by: Jungle Monkey | February 04, 2008 at 09:19 AM
I dont think Leg's is affraid of anyone haha. and what's with the king kong jorde?? ha, the kid can throw em but i think the king kong status should go to bert! Just a thought. I think he has shown me more this year than any of them. I dont know what you would call woodsy. ha. i love watchin him skate. and of course chaulker.... man we are stacked with some talent AND possibly the top 4 or 5 fighters in the league. even tho some dont fight that often, when they do, watch out. i think most teams know this :)
Posted by: booner | February 04, 2008 at 11:44 AM
Fighters= #1 King-kong Jorde #2 Snowball #3Cornish #4 Mallette
Posted by: mightbite | February 04, 2008 at 12:17 PM
The best superbowl of MY lifetime was last season. Go Colts!
Posted by: TGP | February 04, 2008 at 12:24 PM
Yea TGP cuz your team won.:) I had the two teams i watch in it last year and was disapointed. Game wise, this year smoked it and im not a NE or NY fan....haha. and yes mightbite, snowball is deffinatly one of the best, if not the best. But how can you not put bertram in the top? and like i said, jorde can throw down, but i just dont see him bein the best. it's hard to say anyone is better than another anyways, but kevo should be up there!!! i like henley, but he has yet proved anything to me. still a solid D-man which is the most important. but it's hard missin all that time to get right back at it. good luck Hen... keep it up Bert!

Thought this was a Komet hockey blog? Pigskin blogs can be found on NFL.com
Posted by: St. Christopher | February 04, 2008 at 02:23 PM
Ok mightbite... I'll bite.... Cornish has yet to have an IHL fight, Mallette's fights are all wrestling matches, Jorde has some skill, but isn't the best fighter in the league. He hasn't beat Henley, and I don't see him trying anytime soon.
Posted by: Jungle Monkey | February 04, 2008 at 02:59 PM
The whole Legault has a bad finger is BS... This comes directly from Legault... He is NOT injured in any way... Heard it right from his mouth...
Posted by: Komet Gallery | February 04, 2008 at 03:03 PM
easy chrisopher... I think we can say it was a good game on this blog. Does someone always have to add some negative feelings on here. we might have went almost a week without any of that, and i stress almost... you know, if you dont like any of these comments, you could start your own blog instead of being negative....?? if not, try joinin in on some of these comments and try to have fun!! just a thought. And well put JUNGLE MONKEY :)
Posted by: booner | February 04, 2008 at 03:07 PM
Who cares if his finger is broke or not.... either he plays or he doesnt play. either way, we get to see komet hockey!! I understand some of you may want to see him play that bad, but is his not playin going to affect whether or not you go to a game?? or do some of you enjoy drama so much you complain about every little peice of info cohny types. YOU DA MAN COHN! and ok guys, sorry, my ranting is done :) just one of those days i guess. how about those GIANTS...:) sorry, had too! lol
Posted by: booner | February 04, 2008 at 03:15 PM
Cornish dropped the gloves with Kovalcik Friday night just to let you know. Dropyourgloves.com is a great hockey fight website with fight prediction and goon leagues. Check it out

Jorde is #1 cause it's hard to fight when they won't fight him. Just like the nhl heavy weight LARAQUE.
Posted by: mightbite | February 04, 2008 at 04:57 PM
I agree with you christopher...taking nothing away from the great pigskin game, but THIS is called a hockey blog for a reason.......
Posted by: faith | February 04, 2008 at 06:19 PM
doesnt matter if legault is hurt or not. you guys have to know the rules. we are currently two players over the limit so to keep those extra guys, two guys have to go on injured reserve. simple as that. right now the coach wants him to sit. i would rather sit one of our d men but as the last home game shows, we needed every one of them. but id still sit a d man against flint and go with the tough guy forwards. oh well, theres always next week!!!
Posted by: chuckitt | February 04, 2008 at 06:29 PM
Cornish sure proved he was a top heavyweight. Sad showing for him. Jorde, Legault, Henely, Snowball, Bert, Ewasko, Mallette, Kovalcik...they are all tough, never has any hockey player at any level won all of thier fights. Kinda like black jack, win some, lose some, or break even. I've been around awhile, like most of us on here, and its tough to point out the strongest, toughest, whatever you call it, to a single player.
Posted by: Brando | February 04, 2008 at 06:41 PM
Well said Brando, watching some of these guys just flinging their arms forward and just as quick pulling them back and flinging them ahead again will get them a fat lip half the time. A real fighter has defensive skills, that means some wrestling to get into position or an arm free, then you punch with power, that means following thru with your punch (uppercuts make a fighter punch more correctly automatically) but just as important is that first punch, ie. Bertram. Its luck of the draw to get off quick with free arms and hurt him. The real deal is why you fight and that you get your point across, you may see a fight as a loss for one guy but if he got the point across then it meant something. Alright I'm done!
