that 73 team to me was one of the most exciting ones ive seen. maybe because i was their age and my buddies and i did alot of partying with some of those guys.but the team was mediocre until christmas and with the arrival of jim hyrchuk(SP) from washington, the whole team played above their abilities. the second half of the season was probably one of the best akomet team has ever had and the game where fitchner challenged the bench from center ice was one of the top moments in my memory of komet hockey. poor rodney cox. he dindt know what he was getting himself into! that sparked the team and they only lost one more game the rest of the playoffs even tho robbie irons got hurt and a nobody with little playing time took over and led us to the turner cup. port urine didnt have a chance. the ks were so fired up from the flint series i think the ks could have beaten many nhl teams at that point. and the komet fans didnt let the team down either as around a dozen bus loads and numerous cars made the long trip. you dont see arenas anymore that the visiting teams fans outnumbered the home teams!!! to drink champagne out of the turner cup in the locker room will always be the biggest highlight of my sports memories!!!!
Nice column Justin, a very good read and Good story Chuckitt!! It's great to hear old stories like that and to be a part of them would of been even better.
The 72-73 season was when I was first introduced to hockey. My father lived to regret taking me to my first game as I was forever hooked!!! I thought Jimmy Hrychuik was jusg soooooooo cute! I've been a Komet fan ever since.
like i said justin, i partied witha few of those guys and we just walked in. everybody was deleriously happy and really didnt care too much! we had a great time there! got there early and went to a bar acrooss the street from the arena and everybody in there thought it was cool that ft wayne people were in there! little did they know about the bus loads yet to come! we had such a good time with them they told us to come back after the game and theyd save us a table. well afterwards we figured they were just trying to be nice and we went back and the line to get in the place was long, one of the servers saw us in line and waved us in, and sure enough, they had a table all reserved for us! great memories! its sad to see the fan base in port urine at such a low number. hopefuly it will grow and they can be a great member of the new ihl!!
