The Fort Wayne Komets waived defenseman Jason Jaworski and center Michael George on Thursday, dropping their roster size to 21, the number they will likely have when they play their regular-season opener Saturday against the Port Huron Icehawks at Memorial Coliseum.
The departure of Jaworski means the Komets will move Brandon Warner and Jake Pence from their nature forward positions to defense. With them, the Komets have seven defensemen.
Franky, I'm surprised with both cuts. Jaworski has been nomadic, but I thought his experience would be a good stabilizing force on what is a very young defense. And while I know coach Al Sims was concerned with George's defensive play, he clearly had offensive skills. I bet he's picked up somewhere and puts up good numbers.

My thoughts exactly on George...
He may come back to bite us...
Posted by: FWKRTJ | October 18, 2007 at 05:20 PM
I liked George and didn't think he was going to get cut.
Posted by: Junior | October 18, 2007 at 05:33 PM
So what happens if henley, trembley, and Chewy end up here. Who would we cut loose and would we meet the requirements of rookies and vets?
I would love to see all of tohose people come here.
To bad to see George go but i never really noticed him.

Even at 21 roster spots, don't they usually carry 23 w/ 2 being on the IR? Or is it 19 w/ 2 being on the IR?
Posted by: Junior | October 18, 2007 at 05:38 PM
Last season you could carry 19 on your active roster (2 goal, 18 platers, 1 healthy scratch), however you were able to have others on IR (7day, 14day, 21day, etc.). I am not sure of the rules in the IHL.
Posted by: Shawn | October 18, 2007 at 06:24 PM
oops platers = PLAYERS
Posted by: Shawn | October 18, 2007 at 06:24 PM
I could see saidachev and maybe curradeau getting waived if we sign them three. That would only put one on a IR

Posted by: Junior | October 18, 2007 at 09:18 PM
Actually, I'm interested. Is that story finally open? How much do they pay for DVDs and will you hook me up?
Do they take CDs too?

By the way, the goalie is hitting his stick to the ice and we have someone ready to come out of the penalty box ....

??? what, we don't count as inside info??

Tell me who to hit coach....tell me coach....can I Hit Somebody???
Posted by: Hit Somebody!!! | October 18, 2007 at 09:29 PM
That was a long dog-on penalty. There is only so many times you can sing 10,000 bottles of beer on the wall and not drive the penalty box keeper mad.

Any info on who the Assistant captains are this year? I assume Guy is still El Capitano and Chaulk will one of the assistants is Hansen the other?
Posted by: Andy | October 18, 2007 at 09:41 PM
Transformers HD-DVD is sweet.
Posted by: Hit Somebody!!! | October 18, 2007 at 09:42 PM
Chaulk can't be the A since he's helpin.
I have no clue, I thought they were going to keep George if that tells you anything.
Posted by: Junior | October 18, 2007 at 09:45 PM
Chaulk can not be at any captain status. Dupuis def. Then I say Durdin and Sessa. But Shaf, Marchant and Hansen could deserve it too. thats a tough decision with all the talent
Posted by: lovelost | October 18, 2007 at 09:46 PM
I still don't see why they got rid of George. especially with not alot of left wingers. Theres a couple other guys I thought would ge before him. But we can't see These guys play 24/7.

I am going to break Justin's rule here, this club still lacks any blue-line toughness. Warner is not a d-man his natural position is forward. I believe this club will struggle in the first half of the season with only one true goaltender. Can he carry the load that frenchy did? I think not because of the lack of toughness in front of him. The K's maybe able to score but the lack of a solid and tough as nails defense is where they will struggle.
Posted by: David | October 18, 2007 at 10:09 PM
george might be a big scorer in another league but here he just kinda stood around and wasnt very quick up the ice. i was suprised about jaworski but then again we dont know whats still in the fire. go indians!!
Posted by: chuckitt | October 18, 2007 at 10:09 PM
Sounds like they are making room for some additions to me. Pence and Warner are versatile in that they can play forward or defense and I think the 2 they cut proves 2 or 3 guys who are highly thought of are on their way in...
Odds on a goalie coming our way? I'd say good, very good.
Posted by: Hit Somebody!!! | October 18, 2007 at 10:11 PM
I agree with Hit I think they are making room for henley chewy and trembley. that would be awesome
GO KOMETS!!!!!!!!!!!HOCKEY!!!!!!

by the way Upshall was put on waivers today by K-Zoo
Posted by: Charlie I | October 19, 2007 at 12:21 AM
I would be VERY surprised if the Komets pass up on Brad Smith. He was waived by the Wings today (he's the goalie that beat us at home 7-4). He is the most underrated goalie in the league (or he was when he was under contract with K-zoo) and could be one of the best if given a real shot. He played phenominal with Port Huron in emergency relief last season for a bad Flags team. He was never really given a shot with QC while Tapper hogged all of the icetime. This guy could start over Reiter...He's that good!
Posted by: FWKRTJ | October 19, 2007 at 12:58 AM
FWKRTJ is on top of this. Smith needs to get signed. He's 10 times the goalie that Hanna is. I'd like to see Smith get a shot.
Posted by: Jungle Monkey | October 19, 2007 at 07:15 AM
I don't agree with you Justin that the Komets have a very young defense. Guy, Hansen, Bertram, Drudin(yes young but very skilled and was our number one dispersal draft pick). I think out of the 7 d-men listed, 4 have plenty of expierence that can compensate for the other three. I'm not that worried as far as the expierence goes.
With George, only saw him in the pre-season game Saturday night and wasn't impressed. Don't know exactly what was going on there.
Have to keep the faith the Sims knows what he's doing. We'll find out on Saturday night.

Posted by: tj | October 19, 2007 at 11:15 AM
Someone correct me if I'm wrong. The IHL upped the playing roster to 19 from 18, did they increase the active roster? And how many can you have on teh active roster.

Posted by: JungleMonkey | October 19, 2007 at 12:37 PM
I am to. Really surprised that he's on the IR, he had a solid preseason.
When's Cohn gonna give us the guy comin out of the box???

Does anyone know where Mike Sgori is playing?
Posted by: mightbite | October 19, 2007 at 03:22 PM
Just saw this on the USA TODAY transactions page. Dale Purinton was suspended 25 games for a hit to the head. Hockey is getting serious with these hits.

Is it ok for me to say that Savage is a RETARD....if I can't say that....I am sorry and I retract it. Bloomington #2? That is freaking hillarious.
Any chance that the K's have 2 or 3 new guys in the line-up tomorrow that aren't on the roster right now? Kukulka and Granbois on the IR sounds like a roster move to me to free up space for new comers. I figured Kukulka to be a #2 liner and Granbois a solid #3 liner. Anyone have any ideas on this?

I'm watching the Tulsa Oilers vs Amarillo Gorillas and in net for Tulsa is Frency and McWhinney in net for Amarillo. Both have made some great saves so far.

Go Dan!!!! That would be pretty cool if he got the win tonight.

Arthur Kiyaga got himself in a nice little scrum with about a minute remaining in the 1st, wouldn't call it a fight but close
