Junior

Let's get those boy's going. I'm ready for some hockey!!! I think once these guys see our support during the season, they are really going to enjoy playing in this town. I'm READY!!!

Brad Lyons

WOW, you mean Frenchy CAN skate??? :-) It's always funny watching him skate to center ice, try to slow-down, touch the center ice with his stick, and get going again to his home in front of the pipes. Ahhhhh I see it now, WELCOME BACK FRENCHY!!

Tom

I have said this many times, the support in Fort Wayne is great with the numbers we put in the seats, but compared to some other arenas (Rockford, Muskegon, and sometimes K-zoo) we could work on the noise in our building. I would love to have the jungle be so loud I couldn't talk to those in my section. That is how it used to be not too long ago and that and the play on the ice is what got me hooked on hockey. Lets light the lamp, talk the talk, and walk the walk and have a championship season both on the ice and in the crowd. GO K'S!

paulsy

Our area is bigger than those other buildings so the noise is there. When you have 10k plus in the house, it's LOUD.

Tera

I've heard the Coliseum as loud at 5000 as at 10000 on a couple of occasions.

GO KOMETS!!! I can't wait til next Wednesday!! Has anyone heard when we can pick up season tickets?

Junior

Did anyone see how many players from Rockford are in the AHL training camps trying out? It's like 11 players. Someone should do a ratings system to rank the teams/players in our league. Rockford makes me nervous, I would hate to lose to that coach every time we play 'em, bunch of punks.

Brad Lyons

I shouldn't say this, but I'm speaking my mind. I've done announcing in years past for college hockey and basketball games and would do my best to get the crowd going with how I announce, music selection and sound effects played. The announcer at the Komets games is boring, VERY VERY BORING! He doesn't get into it, I mean, listen to the Komets games on WOWO when we're at Rockford when a penalty is called, he really gets into it and gets them riled up!

In talks with Scott and the team, I understand why. I've talked to them about doing sound design, stuff that will get the crowd going but the issue is to have a "family atmosphere". I understand and respect that, but at the same time they really can take it up a notch. For example they won't play the "HEY SONG" during the regular season because the guy who wrote that was busted for child molestation. Okay, I had NO idea about that and I'm in the music business!! WHO CARES, it's a song that gets the crowd going. Only the true hockey fans that go all the time know that stupid "Olay olay olay olay...." crap of a song! And then when the announcement of who scored the goal, he's BORING BORING BORING!!

Brad Lyons

OH Season tickets are ready to be picked up at the office on Monday, October 2nd. I verified this today (and bought ten more tickets for my friends).

Justin Cohn

Brad, I'm sorry, if you didn't know about Gary Glitter and all his troubles, you haven't been paying attention. That's been an issure in arenas for many years. Several cities won't play Rock and Roll Part 2 because he keeps getting in trouble for the same things and people think it sends the wrong message. Radio stations aren't playing it for the same reason. You won't hear it at NFL games either, I don't think.

Hit Somebody!!!

Wow there is an issue that has been dead for months. Maybe Mr. Lyons is new to this forum. I for one think that Larry does a great job. He does have some constraints and isn't allowed to just play everything he wants, or we want for that matter.

chuckitt

ive said it before, if we ban rock and roll part two because gary glitter is a child molester then we need to ban white christmas cause bing crosby was a child abuser. but icy and the nut cracker suite is wholesome? when are we gonna stop all this pc sillyness?

Hit Somebody!!!

Amen Chuckitt......I mean...right on MAN!!!! Forgot that Amen isn't PC enough.

Justin Cohn

As long as we get rid of that Let's Go Komets song, I don't care. It's like running your fingernails on a chalkboard ... every freaking game

KometsPA

Brad,
My job is not to be a cheerleader. The fans know the game and I am there for information and not to sound like a total jackass like some of the other announcers in this league. I think people know how I call the game after 9 years. And no, I don't need an understudy so don't ask.

Annie

Larry, you're an asset to the Komets and the Coliseum. Keep up the good, classy, job. Justin, wait until you have a 12-year old at home who feels a need to crank 'Let's Go Komets' on the home stereo before each game and a few extra times through the week.

Junior

Wow!! Enough said K'sPA. True that, we are a knowledgeable hockey town, we don't need to be pumped up by an angry PA guy yelling at us to get out of our seats. If a possible goal isn't enough to get us going, then we shouldn't be at the game. HERE HERE!! That's "Let's Go Komets" song is still stupid though.

Brad Lyons

Larry,

I'm not attacking you, just stating my personal feelings. No ill-will meant but I do apologize because I can see how this came across. I guess I'm on the other side of the fence that when I go to an athletic event, I want to get riled up. Sure, a goal scored or big check into the boards or a great save riles the fans up, but the more the better.

HOWEVER on the other side of the fence, this is a minor league franchise and the most important thing (Besides winning!) is to give the paying fans a fun, family atmosphere that displays fair sportsmanship. Families bringing their kids there once a month, maybe once a year want to have a place where they can enjoy a game, but more importantly enjoy the time as a family. Thus, I understand (now knowing) why they won't play the Hey song.

But as a fan, I believe that the announcer's job IS to be a cheerleader as they are the ONLY voice to the crowd. But each person has their own style, and obviously your style works best for you and that's why you've been doing this for nine years now? Congratulations! :-) Obviously, the Komets do things right as we're a model franchise in minor league sports as I see it. :-)

Junior

I like how the Montreal Canadians play the Darth Vador theme before a power play. I have also heard other arean's play it.

Greg

Brad, I couldn't disagree with you more. What I want from the PA announcer is to announce the goals, assits, PIM's and that's it. I realize the Komets have corporate sponsors so Larry has to do that other divile(sp). I don't want a cheerleader. Those to me distract me from the game.

JC

A couple note worthy points.....Robin Bouchard has left the Fury to play in Italy with Jeff Nelson. Also, the Komets added 6 guys to the training camp roster today. Come on Cohn! You are behind here! haha!

Justin Cohn

Annie, I'm sure the kids like that song. But try listening to it about 40 games a year for several years, when you didn't think it was any good in the first place. Sorry Larry, I don't know if you like it or are forced to play it, but it's just not good. Annie's the first one I've ever heard of who liked it. As for the rest of this fray, I'm staying out of it.

Brad Lyons

Justin,

When I was with the Toledo Mud Hens, believe me THAT is a song to get sick of! I don't know if they still play it or not, but the words started like this:

"Parking in the lot, waiting at the gate. Coming in the door, fans can't wait. Filling up the seats, popcorn's hot. Come on fans, show us what ya got. Game time gang, come on fans, Hip Hip Hooray here come the HENS. Oh how we love them Hens." But it was sang like a nursery rhyme. AND with minor league baseball, it was EVERY day. But any song enough times, no matter HOW good or HOW bad it is is enough to drive one mental over it! In my recording studio, if I'm spending too much time on a project I get sick of it and it drives me nuts. By the time the CD is mixed and I hear it playing, I'm already sick of it.

I'm sure he is forced to play it, it's the theme song that the Komets have and until they decide to have a new song written, I'm sure it will stay there. I admit for awhile, I did like the song but as Justin has pointed out after so much time.... you get sick of it. Fortunately it's only what, 2:15 long? :-)

Chad

Talking about cheerleader, isn't that Icy's job??

chuckitt

ICY? does he still go in the stands? bring back the cheerleaders!!

Justin Cohn

I don't know. Maybe if Larry reads this he can tell us where the song came from. I think he got it made.

Komets PA

Justin,

Shawn Browning from the Migraines and Grave Robber, Tim Bushong of Love/War, and myself wrote and performed the song. It was something that we were very proud of. It has gotten a little stale and we would like to do a new song in the future. We have had one planned for Icy for a while and would like to get that into the mix this season. We figured that the Komets had not had a theme song at the time and we wrote it from the heart. It'll get played less this season.
As for the way I do the game, I would rather have some dignity and not be a screamer. People remember the classic announcers like the gentlemen from the Yankees or the Red Wings. They have longevity, and people don't need to be told when to clap. If hockey isn't enough to excite anyone, then why go?

Justin Cohn

Thanks for the info, Larry. I applaude the effort in the song, very much. No one disputes that. Here's hoping you find one that catches on, isn't hokey, gets the crowd pumped up and is appropriate all at the same time.

paulsy

There are several things people are missing other than complaining about what song is played, not played enough or should play in the background during the game.

I've been to several rinks over the past 30 years and most announcers don't have the passion or pride that Larry has with the Komets. For those of us who know Larry, he's really good at what he does. Announce the game, create some humor and fill in the spaces with creative music.
There's a reason he's doing what he does. Do you ever listen to the snipits when one of the hated pests is charged with a penalty. Perhaps a blown call by a referee is met with a loony toons snipit.
What it all comes down to is the experiance. If your waiting for music to hype you up, save your $18 bucks and go see a concert. Larry's not there to take your requests for American Top 40.

It's obvious BL is trying to worm his way into the announcing booth. Too bad he used this blog to bash Larry and stir the pot.

Brad Lyons

Pauly,

No, no I'm not trying to get into the announcing booth. My announcing days are over, I've been battling breathing issues for 3-years now and after a serious throat surgery a year ago, I'm possibly facing another. Just talking normally and breathing, at times, can be quite the challenge. Besides, I don't have the time even if I wanted or had the opportunity to. I wouldn't be dependable, because of my breathing issues.

I want to make a publically apology to anyone my post may have offended, I just see things more "progressive". Understand these are my views and feelings and simply that of one of how many fans? I mean no harm, just being honest. I'm a fan that, sometimes, goes a little overboard. So if I'm man enough to apologize and say I was wrong, I hope you're man enough to accept it ;-)

Brad

Skate

I like that Komet song.

Even though I hate the NBA, whenever the Bulls were on TV and had their intro, I would always watch just to hear the guys intro=ed to that chiming song. Whatever it was. Then turn the station.

The Komets did that for a while. Problem was, you could barely hear it.

Skate

Brad --

First off, never, EVER apologize for anything you say on a blog.

What's the point of having a blog if you can't make snide, rude, sarcastic comments about everyone and everything without fear of retribution?

Blogs are the PERFECT place to insult people freely.

Justin Cohn

Hey, it's not his blog. Just kidding. I'm just waiting for the day Hit Somebody apologizes for something ... anything.

Hit Somebody!!!

I apologize for Justin Cohn's picture a few days ago....MAN....that was brutal. LOL Kidding Justin.

I apologize for trying to get people fired up on here. I too go over-board, but I think most of you guys, by now, know that I am most of the time just attempting to get a laugh or even a smile. Life is too dang short and too stressful to not come onto a blog and have a little fun. For those of you that look at this thing as life and death...take a deep breath and relax. It is a freaking blog about a minor league hockey team. Take it easy and have some fun. So I'll say it again...SORRY!!!!

Hit Somebody!!!

I feel like Enema Man now...I couldn't give a crap about taking crap....I mean...Gosh.

Justin Cohn

Amen, people take it too seriously sometimes. Just wait until they're 0-2-1.

chuckitt

it doesnt take a knowledgable person too many games to notice who can and who cant. nobody should complain until good players get cut or bad ones keep geting thrown out there!

stoney85

The Bulls intro song is the Alan Parson's Project song called Sirius (intro for Eye in the Sky) from the 1990.

I like Brad airing his opinion, but I am not a fan of the 'hyper PA announcer' type. I like Larry's style and I especially like the subtitle vocal inflections he uses to announce that 'questionable' call against the K's or the 4th Komet penalty in a row.

P.S. Larry, if your reading...please play the heavied up instrumental version of "Back in Black' more. I love that song......is that Yngwie Malmsteen?

Tom

I used to be an announcer too and I love it when the announcer does get the crowd going when it is dead. Some nights we are not given much to get us going and those are the nights that an announcer could turn it up a few notches. Also Welcome to the Jungle used to realyl get the crowd going before every game and I am glad that you don't play it ever game now and you play it at great moments during some games...great timing of that.....Great...when the game is becoming physical to our advantage or we are making a comeback or holding on to a lead it is always great to here that song. I still do here Rock and Roll part 2 at several places including NFL and NBA stadiums. Larry is doing a great jobs especially with the snip pits of penalties and players from the other teams and Go Johny Go etc, that stuff is great. Keep doing more. I remember going to Quad City or kalamazoo and the Star Wars song was played as the Komets went on the ice cause they were the bad guys and the music told the crowd so, maybe an idea for Fort Wayne too. Please welcome the Rockford Icehogs...duh..duh duh da duh duh dun duh duh da duh. That makes sense since they are now our evil empire along with Muskegon. Also Kalamazoo beat the crap out of us this year but are rivalry with them seems to be a rivalry that we enjoy and we don't seem to hate Kalamazoo because of the way they play the game. When we play Rockford (another rival) we seem to really hate them. Has anyone else noticed this. I find it interesting.

Brad Lyons

I don't think "hate" quite describes the rivalry with Rockford. The first time they were in the jungle last year, I remember they were trying to fight before the ref dropped the puck. The moment the puck was dropped, the two taking the face-off were going at it and the whistle blew with 3-seconds gone by. There were two and I think maybe even three LONG stoppages in play to sort out the penalties. I expected it to be honest, after the double-overtime win in Game 7 of the semi's the previous year. Man that was a fun game, and I never thought that horn was going to stop!! :-)
