McDaid promoted to Lake Elsinore

June was a big month for reliever Derek McDaid. First he earned an all-star invitation. And on the last day of the month he earned a promotion.

McDaid is headed to Lake Elsinore, San Diego’s high Class A team in the California League.

“It was well deserved for a true professional,” Wizards manager Doug Dascenzo said.

McDaid has a 3.89 ERA this year. He has struggled a bit in recent outings, allowing nine earned runs in his last eight innings. He surrendered a home run in Monday’s 6-2 victory against Dayton.

McDaid has 24 strikeouts and just 11 walks in 37 innings (33 appearances).

Dascenzo said the Wizards will likely add pitcher Dylan Axelrod to the roster. Axelrod went 2-1 with a 1.27 ERA in 10 appearances (21 1/3 innings) with the Wizards last year. He is in Lake Elsinore.
