This wasn't exactly what we had planned for Post No. 1000 here at Insights (thanks readers), but we just received notice that former Notre Dame All-American football player Jerry Groom died Friday night in Sarasota, Fla. at age 78.
Groom, a College Football Hall of Fame inductee after a career as a center and linebacker in South Bend, was a consensus All-American in 1950 and had an interception in the SMU end zone during the 1949 season finale to give Notre Dame a 27-20 win and a national championship.
After football, Groom became a vice president with Levi Strauss.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Incarnation Catholic Church in Sarasota.
