Gotten a couple questions about how Notre Dame clinched a bye.
Here's your answer.
As far as the bye, the worst Notre Dame could do is tie Marquette at 12-6 in the standings, providing the Irish lose to both St. John's and South Florida.
If this scenario occurs, the Irish still receive the bye because of Notre Dame's win over Connecticut on Jan. 5.
Neither the Irish nor the Golden Eagles beat Georgetown or Louisville. Notre Dame beat Connecticut and Marquette did not, but the tiebreaker states you have to go to equal games played and the Huskies and Golden Eagles played once while the Irish and Huskies played twice.
Notre Dame and Marquette both beat Pittsburgh and Cincinnati, so those also cancel out.
Where it happens is with West Virginia. The Irish beat WVU. Marquette lost to the Mountaineers, forcing them into fifth place while the Irish clinch a bye.
This is how it was explained to us by the always-helpful John Paquette at the Big East Conference.

Can you also explain who would win the tie-breaker between ND & UCON if they finish in a tie for 3rd place?
