Brey On Coach K
Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski won his 800th game Saturday afternoon and the feat wasn't lost on his former assistant, Notre Dame head coach Mike Brey.
Brey spent eight seasons under Coach K in Durham, N.C. before becoming a head coach at Delaware. In that time, Duke went to six Final Fours, four championship games and won two NCAA titles. And in Brey's final year at Duke, he helped steer the Blue Devils when Krzyzewski missed half the season due to back surgery and recovering from it. In the interim, he and the rest of the Blue Devils' assistants split up head coaching duties, which helped prepare Brey to take his first head coaching job a year later in Newark, Del.
"I joked with him that if he didn't have to carry me for eight years, he would have gotten there a few years go," Brey said Tuesday of Krzyzewski's 800th win. "It's a heck of an accomplishment if you look at the numbers and what they do on a yearly basis."
As for whether or not Brey would hang around for 800 wins -- he's currently got 263 -- the 47-year old will have to be around for a while.
"Probably so, when I think about what else I could do," Brey said. "I don't know what else I can do. ... I don't have any Plan B right now (so) you think about doing this a long time. Boy, that's a lot of years, though. A lot of years."
