Notre Dame basketball odds and ends

Notre Dame sophomore forward Luke Harangody was named the Big East's Player of the Week after averaging 21.7 points and 10.7 rebounds against North Florida, West Virginia and Connecticut.
Not bad for Harangody, considering he took 23 shots against the Huskies and struggled for most of the night. Imagine what his numbers would have been if he had played better against UConn.

Rankings Notes:

  • Notre Dame's men's basketball team received 18 votes in the latest ESPN/USA Today Coaches' poll, squeezed between St. Mary's (no, not the all-girls school) and West Virginia. Marquette is No. 16.
  • In the AP poll, Notre Dame is No. 27 with 74 votes, between Oklahoma and Arizona State. Marquette is 15th. Among the AP voters -- their votes are made public weekly -- Dick "Hoops" Weiss of the Daily News had the Irish the highest at No. 18. Patrick Stevens of the Washington Times had Notre Dame at No. 20 and John Feinstein of the Washington Post had the Irish at No. 21 along with Dan Wolken from the Memphis Commercial Appeal. As far as Indiana voters, the Indianapolis Star's Terry Hutchens had ND at No. 25 and Stacy Clardie from The Journal Gazette did not rank Notre Dame.
  • On the women's side, Notre Dame remained at No. 14 in the AP poll. Connecticut is No. 1 and Tennessee is No. 2.
  • At the composite Bracket Project, Notre Dame is in the NCAA Tournament as a No. 8 seed, being listed on every updated bracket. ESPN's Joe Lunardi had No. 8 Notre Dame in Raleigh, N.C. playing No. 9 Kent State before a game against No. 1 North Carolina.
