Notre Dame Football Banquet Awards
While no Notre Dame players save for maybe Trevor Laws will be receiving any national accolades for on-field play this offseason, the Irish held their annual post-season banquet on Friday night and handed out the annual team awards.
Not surprisingly, Laws was voted the team's Most Valuable Player by his peers. Laws, a Burnsville, Minn., native, had 112 tackles and was the only defensive lineman in the Top 100 nationally in tackles. Laws also had four sacks, seven quarterback hurries and three blocked kicks.
Laws also won the Knute Rockne Student-Athlete Award given by the Notre Dame club of St. Joseph Valley. Laws graduated in May 2007 with a GPA of 3.22.
The team's other standout Minnesotan, fifth-year senior tight end John Carlson, was named the Nick Pietrosante Award winner given to the student-athlete best personifying the courage, loyalty, teamwork, dedication and pride the late Notre Dame All-American fullback displayed. Carlson also won the Student-Athlete of the Year Award for the second straight year after graduating in May 2007 with a GPA of 3.667 and being named a National Scholar-Athlete.
Junior nose tackle Pat Kuntz was given the Lineman of the Year award by the Moose Krause Chapter of the National Football Foundation after making 42 tackles and breaking up nine passes. Kuntz finished second in the country behind Houston's Phillip Hunt in pass breakups.
Finally, the Guardian of the Year Award given to the team's top offensive lineman went to fifth-year senior center John Sullivan. Sullivan captained a Notre Dame offensive line that allowed a NCAA-worst and school record 56 sacks. The Irish could be receive a reprieve from being the nation's worst offensive line if Arizona State allows more than five sacks in its Holiday Bowl game against Texas on Dec. 27 in San Diego.
