Former Irish runner Ryan Shay -- probably the best distance runner in Notre Dame history -- died this morning during the U.S. Olympic Marathon trials in New York City.
Shay, 28, collapsed and was taken to Lenox Hill Hospital.
The 2002 Notre Dame graduate was the NCAA 10,000 meter champion in 2001 and was the 2003 U.S. Marathon champion.
"He was a tremendous champion who was here today to pursue his dreams," Craig Masback, the chief executive of the United States track-and-field governing body, told the Associated Press. "The Olympic trials is usually a day of celebration, but we are heartbroken."
Shay was a nine-time All-American at Notre Dame and when he graduated, held the school records for the indoor and outdoor 5,000 meters and the outdoor 10,000 meters.
