Notre Dame has a new starting quarterback.
Irish coach Charlie Weis named junior Evan Sharpley the starting quarterback for Saturday's game against USC, replacing freshman Jimmy Clausen.
Sharpley is the third starting quarterback for Notre Dame this year.
"Evan, this week, gives us the best chance of winning," Weis said. "It's the exact same thing I told both quarterbacks, just so you know."
Weis met with both quarterbacks Monday to inform them of the switch.
Sharpley has played in six games this season, all in relief of either Clausen or former Notre Dame quarterback Demetrius Jones.
Sharpley is 43 of 80 for 479 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions. He has also thrown the ball vertically more than Clausen.
Weis, though, wouldn't commit to this being a permanent switch or a week-to-week arrangement.
"We're just talking about USC," Weis said. "That's all we're talking about. Evan Sharpley is the quarterback for USC.
"How would I know if it's permanent. I don't know that answer. It's a permanent switch for the USC game."
Weis said there hadn't been a consideration of starting Sharpley earlier than this week.
"At any time we would have thought the best person for us to win the game would be Evan, Evan would have been in there," Weis said. "We've reached that point."
