Mike Brey received the e-mails, questioning if he was really old enough to be a Hall of Famer. Turns out the 48-year-old is.
Brey will be inducted into the University of Delaware Hall of Fame on Nov. 9. He led the Blue Hens to two NCAA Tournaments and a 99-50 record.
"I'll always be indebted to Delaware," Brey said. "They gave me the opportunity to be a head coach. I had no head coaching experience. They also gave me every opportunity to win."
When Delaware hired Brey in 1995, he had been an assistant coach at Duke. Before he left in 2000 to take over at Notre Dame, he became one of the most successful coaches in Blue Hen history.
So seven years after he departed, he'll be permanently enshrined along with his former player, Mike Pegues, who was one of the best players in Delaware history.
"That's kinda quick but maybe they are running out of basketball guys so they got to throw us in there," Brey joked. "But it was a great time in Delaware basketball history. It was an amazing run. It was the thing to be at. The Bob Carpenter Center was 5,000 sold out. The governor had to be seen there having a drink before the game, the secretary of state, you had to be seen.
"It was the cool thing to do, especially the last three years I was there. It was trendy to be a Delaware basketball fan. So a lot of great memories."
Brey hasn't left his roots there, either. He keeps a summer home in Rehoboth Beach and pays taxes in the state.
And he's more excited he's being inducted with Pegues, who was instrumental in Delaware's success while he was there. So much so, he tried to get him the best seat in the Hartford Civic Center for the Notre Dame-Connecticut game in Brey's first year with Notre Dame.
"I said 'Mike Pegues should have the best seat,'" Brey said. "If it weren't for Mike Pegues, I wouldn't have the Notre Dame job. So I'm honored he'll be there."
Brey and his wife, Tish, plan on attending the ceremony and working Notre Dame's practice schedule for that day around the honor.
