Some things you know, some things you don't and "I Don't Know Butchie, Instead."
Some things you know:
- Guess who's finally in training camp? Yep, former Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn. Quinn signed a five-year, $20.2 million deal that could escalate to $30 million. Quinn's signing leaves two first round picks -- top selection JaMarcus Russell (Oakland) and cornerback Darrelle Revis (N.Y. Jets) -- unsigned.
- Former Notre Dame wide receiver Jeff Samardzija won his first start at Double A Tennessee on Monday, beating West Tennessee 6-2. Samardzija threw six innings and gave up one earned run. Samardzija, on his blog, wrote that he is treating it like a new season. Sounds vaguely like Charlie Weis' edict following Notre Dame's loss to USC in 2005.
Some things you may have missed:
- Safety Chinedum Ndukwe continues to impress in Cincinnati camp. Bengals coach Marvin Lewis praised him after a recent scrimmage and in the picture with the Columbus Dispatch story, Ndukwe looks even bigger than he did at Notre Dame, where he was notorious for carrying around a gallon jug of water.
- Remember how we told you Jarious Jackson earned his first Canadian Football League start last week? Well, he didn't do too well, being intercepted three times in a 21-9 loss. Despite that, the former Irish quarterback believes he'll be starting again Friday, even though his coach was noncommittal and one newspaper is saying a man named Buck Pierce will start instead.
"I Don't Know Butchie, Instead."
- Michael Strahan needs to make a decision whether to come back or retire. While we don't know how it is affecting his probable replacement, former Notre Dame defensive end Justin Tuck, we do know that there would probably be a comfort level all around if the All-Pro would choose, one way or the other.
- Rhema McKnight's signing with San Diego could work out well. It puts him closer to where he grew up, both in Orange County and Inglewood, Calif. It also provides him with a clearer way up the depth chart, as many of San Diego's receivers were nondescript last season. Plus, as David Grimes told Insights today, McKnight seemed happier about San Diego when he spoke with him a few days ago.
