Akers finishes second in Chicago

Angie Akers had her best finish as a professional volleyball player this weekend at the AVP McDonald’s Chicago Open on North Avenue Beach .

The Notre Dame graduate and Fort Wayne native and her partner, Brooke Hanson were the No. 6 seed this weekend and qualified for their first-ever AVP Tour final, but fell to top-seeded Annett Davis and Jenny Johnson Jordan, 21-16, 24-22.

“It definitely gave us a lot of confidence,” Akers said by phone after he match. “From now on it’s a race, all the tournaments are double points so it is a race to get to the end of the year tournament.”

The Top 8 teams qualify for the season-ending tournament in San Francisco and Akers-Hanson’s runner-up finish moved them into a tie for eighth place with Angela Lewis and Priscilla Lima entering this weekend’s tournament in Manhattan Beach, Calif.

“Going into the weekend everyone thought the top four teams aren’t here so now is the chance,” Akers said. “It is everybody’s weekend. We tried to stay focused and take care of business and it was great.”

Akers and Hanson split $21,000 for their finish. The duo teamed with Dianne DeNecochea and Angela Lewis to win the first 4-on-4 tournament held by the tour, defeating Holly McPeak, Johnson Jordan, Davis and Jennifer Fopma 11-15, 15-13, 15-13.
