Catching Up With...Former Notre Dame quarterback David Wolke
For those who don't remember, quarterback David Wolke transferred from Notre Dame to Western Kentucky after spring football in 2006 when it appeared Evan Sharpley would be the No. 2 quarterback behind Brady Quinn.
Wolke red-shirted a year at Western and is currently in the middle of another competition, this time to become the starting quarterback for the Hilltoppers. In WKU's first scrimmage of the spring, Wolke completed 5 of 9 passes for 62 yards and a touchdown.
We caught up with him for a few minutes earlier today.
Insights: What's been going on with you since you got to Western?
David Wolke: We're going through spring practice right now and I'm competing for the quarterback spot.
Insights: How's that going?
DW: It's going all right. My shoulder is getting better each day and I'm learning this new offense. It will take some time.
Insights: Your shoulder? Did you hurt your shoulder?
DW: I had shoulder surgery about two-and-a-half months ago. My labrum and my rotator cuff has been torn since, I don't know, since I left high school (Eds. note: Wolke told us it was his right, throwing, shoulder) and it's been bothering me and I needed to get it done. So I went ahead and red-shirted last year here so I could have surgery and be ready for the season.
Insights: You left Notre Dame. Do you feel that it has helped you at all, your time at Notre Dame, for when you are competing now for the quarterback spot?
DW: Oh yeah. I've learned a lot from Coach Weis and being up there and everything. It is definitely helping me here even though, you know, the offense is different than what we ran up at Notre Dame. But some of the things, you can put two-and-two together and it is kind of the same thing.
Insights: How is the offense different? Is it a completely different style?
DW: Yeah, it's a different style.
Insights: Looking back, a little over a year, do you feel like you made the right decision for yourself when you left? Are you happier now?
DW: Well, uh, I made the decision and now I've got to do what I got to do. There is no turning back, you know. But I'm happy and I'm having a good time and everything, excited about the upcoming season.
