An interesting signing period came to a close this afternoon but not without last-minute drama fitting of the way recruiting has gone. Both Greg and Chris Little changed their minds at the last second and decided to spurn Notre Dame for North Carolina and Georgia, respectively.
The moves seemed to cement Charlie Weis' feelings toward recruiting and the way it is done, as he announced a revamped way he's approaching the sideshow to the actual games. Read about it tomorrow in The Journal Gazette.
Our overall impressions -- it's a good class. Quarterback Jimmy Clausen is a difference maker. Running back Armando Allen could see the field this year and the Irish added more depth and talent at wide receiver and on the offensive line.
Defensively, it could have been better. Safety Harrison Smith might be the best defensive pickup of the group.
Although he won't say it, this next recruiting class is huge for Notre Dame. He said he wants to bring in 20 players next year. If he does that, he'll stay on track. If Notre Dame runs into problems again, it'll set things back a year.
We think the Irish will be fine, but the pressure is on.
Besides Clausen, who do you think the best recruit is?

Golden Tate could be important as the receiving corps will be a little sparse this year. I think that's the big blow with losing Greg Little because he could have been D. Jarrett huge, both physically and talent-wise, in a few years. He could have also filled some holes on defense. We'll see. Gary Gray should be interesting, especially with Corwin Brown's hiring. How long until the Georgia Tech game???

I think the best besides Clausen is Duval Kamara. Most important besides Clausen is Ian Williams.
