Sitting in Charlie Weis' press conference Tuesday, there were a couple small tidbits which we felt we would mention.
- When asked about quarterback Brady Quinn and the Heisman, Weis gave a diplomatic answer, then threw in this line at the end: "I just told him in April he can go buy his own Heisman."
- A reporter from New Orleans asked Weis about his personality, which the reporter described as "boorish, obnoxious, arrogant," among other things. Weis initially quipped it's part of being from New Jersey -- being from New York, we also get some of that. It's part of the Tri-State area mystique. We're quick, fast and generally sharp-tongued. But then Weis got serious and gave another indication it is all a facade. "I think they're all lies, to tell you the truth," Weis said, and then went on to make some descriptions of the different roles he plays. Our take -- it's a combination. Sure, Weis can be some of those things on the outside, but we also believe there is a different side to him...one capable of joking fairly regularly, one that cares deeply about his players and one that is a devoted family man. Weis is a complex man, something we can guarantee for you from two years of covering him. He also earned more of the media's respect for calling a member of the Notre Dame press corps in the hospital after he had been attacked following the Notre Dame-Navy game in October. That displayed just a part of his human side.
- Weis also indicated he thinks the majority of players in college football -- and certainly the ones on his team -- would be in favor of a playoff. This reminds us, check out our championship game in our virtual playoff between No. 6 Louisville and No. 8 Boise State on the blog Wednesday.
