Hopefully you caught our story on Notre Dame center John Sullivan in today's Journal Gazette.
There was some stuff we couldn't get into the story, so we figured we'd throw the extras on here as an added bonus for you, our Web readers.
- On the field, Sullivan rarely talks to opponents and only will if he is instigated.
- According to senior left tackle Ryan Harris, Sullivan's favorite phrases include: "That's 100 percent wrong," or "That's 100 percent not true."
- He and defensive lineman Trevor Laws both wrestled in high school. Occassionally, this leads to a backyard tussle between the two seniors. However, Laws said, they vowed not to anymore because "somebody always ends up getting hurt. Mostly him." Sullivan also readily admitted that Laws, who was at one point the No. 1 high school wrestler in the country in his weight class, can beat him regularly.
- Laws also had another Sullivan fact: "One time, he said that two-thirds of the salt in the ocean is from whale sperm," Laws explained. "That was just a blatant lie."
- Senior safety Tom Zbikowski said he always sees Sullivan wearing Notre Dame gear.
- Sullivan started playing football in fourth grade because his older brothers had also played. His mother, Marilyn, said they could play any sport except hockey because hockey dominates families' lives in Connecticut.
- Sullivan was 6-foot-2 by the time he was 12 years old, which made him much bigger than the swimmers he would face as a youngster.
- Sullivan's grandfather went to UNC law school. His mom also lived for a short time as a child in Charlotte.
- Marilyn also said her son has a photographic memory: "If he goes to the movies, he'll give you a little synopsis of the movie and then he'll start quoting the lines word for word. He's just that kind of person."
