Komets fans will, no doubt, be saddened to learn that longtime public address announcer Jim Amstutz died of cancer Wednesday in Lisbon, Iowa.
He was 48.
Amstutz, who left the Komets in 1998, was diagnosed over the summer with prostate cancer and it quickly spread throughout his body. He had been hospitalized for a few weeks before being moved home Monday, according to The Cedar Rapids Gazette.
While he was beloved for his work with the Komets throughout the 1980s and 1990s, he was better known in auto-racing circles for his efforts in promotions and as an announcer at Avilla, Angola and Baer Field Speedways.
Amstutz was the general manager and director of racing at Hawkeye Downs Speedway in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, for the last seven years.
The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Cedar Memorial in Cedar Rapids.
